Live Event

During an event on the DMD HUB, the riders who join see each other on the map with how they are doing: riding, on a break, needing a hand. An SOS reaches the crew and the riders nearest to it at once. The organiser posts announcements and regroup pins, riders write to the crew, and everyone can say Finish safe at the end. It is the event's own channel: your riding group carries on beside it.

RIDERS ON THE MAP SOS BOARD & REGROUP CREW FINISH SAFE FREE
Live Event is free for organisers and riders: it needs a HUB sign-in and nothing more — see Free vs. Licensed. You can join an event you are Going to, your own event, or one whose crew you are in, while its live window is open.

Join an event live

Live Event belongs to the events you created on the DMD HUB website and the ones you marked Going — the same ones DMD2 reminds you of on event day. While one of them is live, DMD2 offers to join it in three places:

  • the event's start card over the map, with a green Join live event;
  • a round JOIN button on the map, with a flag;
  • the event's page in the HUB (My Events, or Details on its card): Join live event under Navigate To, and Open live event once you are in.

The start card, and the map's JOIN button behind it.

Each of them opens the Live Event view on its join screen first: it says who will see your position and for how long, with Join live event and Not now. Not now takes the JOIN button off the map for that event; the event's page still offers it.

Not going yet? Mark yourself Going on the event's page first: the HUB lets in the riders going to the event, its organiser and its crew.

The Live Event view and button

Once you join, the round button on the map becomes the event button: a flag with the number of riders sharing now. It turns red and pulses while someone is in SOS, amber while someone needs a hand, grey while you are paused, and shows a tick once you finished safe. Tap it to open the view beside the map; tap it again to close it.

The view, from the top:

  • Crew — the organiser and the crew, joined or not, with their state and how far away they are;
  • My state — four big buttons, then Pause, Finish safe and Leave (see Your state);
  • four tabs: Board, Riders (everyone else, those who need help first, with Navigate), Messages and Event (the live hours, the finish, the public live page and the event's page).
The Riders tab beside the map: a rider in SOS and one who needs a hand at the top with Navigate, then riders on a break and active

The Riders tab: who needs help comes first, with Navigate.

Your state

Everyone sees your state on your pin and your row. You set it yourself; it shows at once and is sent as soon as there is signal.

  Active ·   Taking a break

Riding, or stopped for fuel, food or a view. Active is where you start.

  Need a hand ·   SOS

A puncture, a dropped bike you cannot lift — or an emergency. Both reach the crew and the nearest riders: see SOS and Need a hand.

Pause

Stops sharing your position for a while: the others see you as Paused, in grey. Share again carries on.

Finish safe · Leave

Both stop sharing and tell the others you are safe. Finish safe keeps the view so you can still see who is out there; Leave closes it (“I'm safe, heading home”).

Signal lost is not a state you pick: a rider whose last position is more than five minutes old shows in grey with “last seen … ago”. It is not an SOS — usually a valley without coverage.

The riders on the map

Every rider sharing a position has a pin: their photo or initials in a ring of their state's colour, with a small pennant that says “event rider”. A word under the pin names the ORGANISER, a crew role (SWEEP, LEAD…) or an SOS. Purple pins are regroup points with their time; the chequered flag is the finish. Tap any of them for the Live Event view. In the view, tap a rider to centre the map on them.

A rider who is also in your active riding group shows once, as the group pin. The distances in the view come from your own GPS fix, and only from a fresh one.

SOS and Need a hand

Raising an SOS

Tap SOS and confirm. The crew and the riders nearest to you are alerted, with where you are. Your view then shows your position in large type (or your last known position, and how old it is), the emergency number for the country you are in, and I'm OK, stop the SOS. Pause, Finish safe and Leave wait until the SOS is over.

SOS is on: the last known position in large type, Emergency: 112 and I'm OK, stop the SOS; the crew below with a Call button

Your own SOS.

One SOS everywhere. If you also share your position in a riding group, an SOS here raises your group's Help Me too, and a Help Me raised in the group shows here as an SOS. Stopping one stops the other. The organiser and crew are people, not an emergency service: in an emergency, call the number on the screen as well.
When another rider raises one

The crew hears every SOS. Other riders hear it when they are within 15 km, or among the five riders nearest to it, or when either position is unknown — so the riders who can help hear it, without alarming the whole field. Those riders get:

  • the alert spoken by the navigation voice, and the event button red and pulsing;
  • a red SOS notice in the corner of the map, with how far away the rider is. It stays until you tap it or the SOS ends; another notice can cover it for a moment, then it comes back. Tapping it opens the view;
  • a red card on top of the view while the SOS lasts — who, their note, Navigate — and their pin in red with SOS under it. Tap the card to see them on the map.
The view with Marta Silva raised an SOS on top, her note and Navigate; on the map her red pin with SOS under it, and the sweep close by

Another rider's SOS: the card on top with Navigate, the red pin on the map.

Need a hand reaches the same riders more gently: a short notice, the button and the rider's row in amber, and Navigate in their row — no voice.

The Board: posts, announcements, regroup pins

The Board is for everyone on the event: write in the bar under the view and Send. Posts by the crew are tinted, with their role. Long-press your own post to delete it; the organiser and admins can delete any.

The Board: three pinned announcements, a purple regroup card with its time and Navigate, and the Announce and Regroup pin chips over the composer

Announcements pinned on top, a regroup card, and the organiser's Announce and Regroup pin.

Announcements

The organiser and admins switch on Announce before Send. An announcement is pinned on top of the Board, shown as a notice on every unit and read aloud by DMD2's navigation voice, so riders hear it without looking.

Regroup pins

Write what and where (“Lunch at Casa do Marão”), tap Regroup pin, choose where I am or the centre of the map, then now or in 15 to 90 minutes. Everyone gets a notice, a purple pin on the map with the time, and a card with Navigate.

Messages with the crew

Messages is your private thread with the crew — a question, a problem you would rather not post to everyone. Only the organiser and the admins read it. When the crew answers, a notice opens it.

The organiser and admins see an inbox instead, one thread per rider who wrote, with the newest line; tapping a rider in the view also offers Message. From the website, the organiser can also send one message to several riders at once: each gets it in their own thread.

The crew, roles and Call

The organiser leads the crew. In the view the organiser taps a rider and picks Give a role: Admin (the organiser only names admins), Sweep, Lead, First aid or Support van; admins hand out the riding roles too. No role takes it back. Admins can announce, drop regroup pins and read the crew messages. Everyone in the crew hears every SOS, and is on top of every rider's view, riding or not (“Not riding · reachable by message”).

Call

A crew member can share a phone number with the event's riders: in the view's Event tab, Your number for the riders → Share my number. Every rider then sees a green Call next to their name. Call opens your phone app with the number — DMD2 never places the call itself, and the phone connected to the unit can carry it. The number is kept for this event only; Change number and Stop sharing are in the same place, and on the website's live dashboard.

The finish and Finish safe

When the organiser sets a finish point, it is a chequered flag with FINISH under it on every rider's map, and a Finish card on the Event tab: tap the card to see it on the map, or Navigate to it.

The Event tab: live from 09:30 to 23:00, the Finish card with Navigate, the organiser's shared number with Change number and Stop sharing, and the public live page status

The Event tab: the live hours, the finish, your number (crew) and the public live page.

Ride up to the finish and DMD2 asks “At the finish — Finished safe?”. It asks once per arrival, and only after you were more than a kilometre away, so a loop that starts where it finishes does not ask at the start. It does not ask while you are in SOS, need a hand or are paused. Not yet keeps you riding; you are asked again the next time you arrive.

At the finish: You reached the finish of Testing Event. Finished safe? Not yet and Finish safe

Arriving at the finish.

You finished safe. You can still see who is out there. Riding again

Finished safe, with Riding again.

Finish safe stops sharing your position and tells the others you made it; you keep the view, so you can still see who is out there. Said it too soon? Riding again puts you back to Active while the event is live.

The public live page

An organiser can open a public live page for the event: anyone with its link — family, friends, base camp — follows the event on a map, without an account. You are on it only if you say yes: DMD2 asks once per event, with a card in the view and a notice on the map. Show me on it puts you there as your first name and initial, and only while you share your position; Not me keeps you off it for this event. The Event tab says which, and lets you say yes later. To leave it for a while, Pause.

For the organiser: the website

Live Event comes with every event on the DMD HUB website. In the event's form, the Live Event section has the switch (on by default) and the window: how long before the start it opens (up to 12 hours) and how long after the end it closes (up to 24 hours). Switching it off, at any time, ends live sharing for everyone on the event.

During the event, the Live button in your events list opens the live dashboard, for you and your admins:

  • the map with every rider, coloured by state, the regroup pins, the finish and the event's route;
  • Riders: the roll call with state, last seen and battery, filtered by state; Select sends one message to several riders;
  • Board and Messages, as in the app;
  • Crew: admins and riding roles for any HUB member, found by their e-mail address, and your own number for the riders;
  • Settings: the finish point (set on the map) and the public live page with what it shows — riders, announcements and regroup pins, the route (never before its files unlock) — and its link.

An SOS or a Need a hand sounds and shows on top of the dashboard the moment it arrives.

When the event ends

When the live window closes, DMD2 stops sharing, says the live event has closed and takes the event button off the map. The same happens at once if the organiser switches Live Event off. The event's trails, board and messages are deleted 30 days after the window closes.

Good to know

Your riding group carries on

Live Event is the event's own channel. You stay live in your riding group at the same time; only an SOS crosses over (one SOS everywhere).

In the background

While you share, DMD2 keeps your position going with the screen off or another app in front. A restart picks the event up again while it is live.

Without signal

Your state changes wait for signal and go out when it returns — an SOS raised in a valley too. The others see you as Signal lost meanwhile.

Simulated rides

A simulated ride never reaches the other riders: Live Event shares real positions only.
